by | Sep 2, 2024 | 10 comments

So, you’ve decided to spend some time in Da Nang, one of the fastest-growing digital nomad hubs in Southeast Asia with one of the most affordable cost of living.

Whether you’re looking for the best hotels for digital nomads in Da Nang or simply scoping out your options for living in this vibrant city, you’re in the right place!

I first set foot in Da Nang five years ago as a backpacker, fresh from breaking free of the 9-5 grind, armed with nothing but a dream to build a business that could help others.

I quickly fell in love with this coastal city, nestled between the ocean and the protective gaze of the Lady Buddha. There’s something truly special about Da Nang – a blend of serene natural beauty and bustling urban life that just clicks with the digital nomad lifestyle.

Fast forward five years, and here I am, back in Da Nang with my boyfriend for a second extended stay, this time for three months. After spending two months here earlier, we realized that Da Nang wasn’t just a temporary stop; it was a place that felt like home.

In this article, I’ll share the best areas to stay in Da Nang and some top hotel recommendations tailored specifically for digital nomads.

Whether you’re on a budget, seeking a bit of luxury, or traveling as a couple, I’ve got you covered.

I’ll also provide some essential tips on getting a 3-month visa, where to grab a SIM card, and which ATMs won’t leave you with a massive withdrawal fee at the very end.

Short on time? Here’re my top-picks:

Why do Digital Nomads flock to Da Nang?

Da Nang is quickly emerging as the new Ubud for digital nomads in Southeast Asia.

This coastal city, set right by the South China Sea, is already well-prepared for nomads, offering a mix of modern amenities and a laid-back vibe, though it’s still in the midst of development.

Unlike more established digital nomad hubs like Chiang Mai or Ubud, Da Nang offers the unique advantage of being right by the sea, making those morning commutes to a coworking cafe along the beach a reality.

Living in Da Nang means enjoying stable and fast internet, a safe environment even at night, and a variety of coworking spaces and cafes spread across town.

Plus, the cost of living in Da Nang is about a third lower than in Ubud or Chiang Mai, with prices remaining stable and not inflated for expats. (Check out my full comparison of Ubud and Da Nang.)

Of course, like any rapidly growing city, Da Nang has its quirks. The streets can get a bit filthy, especially on trash days or when it hasn’t rained in a while.

But for me, that’s a small price to pay when a beautiful cafe or the beach is never far away.

Middle of the day – beach to myself.

Cost of Living in Da Nang for Digital Nomads

Compared to the cost of living in Ubud, Da Nang is dirt-cheap. I wrote a comprehensive guide about the cost of living in Da Nang as a Nomad here.

The gist is, you can easily spend less than $1000 a month per person in Da Nang, including regular massages, a nice apartment by the beach, a bike rental, and plenty of going out budget.

Here’s an overview of our costs as a digital nomad couple in Da Nang:

  • 3 month one-time entry visa: $25/person (Intentional Travelers give a step-by-step explanation of how to apply)
  • Two bedroom apartment 2 min from beach: $750/month*
  • Massages: $8 for 60 minutes
  • Going out: $4-10 per person
  • Haircut: $8 for men, $25-80 for women ($80 with discoloration and hair-dye in my case)
  • Transportation: $60 for a monthly bike rental with good negotiation skills 🙂
  • Groceries: $400 for two people, including plenty of ‘Western’ goods and a mix of expat grocery-stores and local produce markets
  • Gym: $15-20/month
  • SIM card: Viettel offers a 1.5Gig/day deal for 3 months, $20 (yes, $20 for three months!)

*As you’ll see below, you can easily get a one-bedroom apartment for $300-500 a month. We simply always opt for extra space for private calls and, also – my man sleeps at arctic temperatures at night, what the…?!

Best Areas to Stay in Da Nang as a Digital Nomad

During our two long-term stays as digital nomads in Da Nang, we’ve always chosen to stay in the My An area of An Thuong. This neighborhood is the most popular among expats, and for good reason: it’s just a 2-minute walk from the beach and offers a wide selection of restaurants, coworking spaces, cafes, and massage spots.

It gives us the perfect setting to be super productive and relax by the beach in between work sessions.

Honestly, if you’re living in a city by the beach, why not be within walking distance of the shore? It’s a no-brainer!

Along the beach, you have three distinct areas to choose from:

  • Marble Mountains: This area offers some of the best-value resorts you’ll find, with a more relaxed atmosphere just a short drive from the Marble Mountains. Prices here are lower, but you might find fewer amenities immediately at hand.
  • My An Beach: This is where we stayed, right along the beach in downtown Da Nang. It’s bustling with tourists, cafes, great restaurants, and hotels, but unlike My Khe, it’s not overwhelmed with clubs and karaoke bars. For me, My An strikes the perfect balance—sleep peacefully, live comfortably, and work productively.
  • My Khe Beach: Just north of My An, this area offers a higher-end dining experience and a lively nightlife scene. The beach is equally beautiful, but the vibe is a bit more energetic and youthful compared to the more laid-back My An.

For sure! We were totally mindblown when we first got here. Even if you don’t have a pool included, most hotels only charge you $4 for all-day access to their pool!
