You know that moment when you’re sipping your third coconut of the day, laptop open, toes in the sand… and suddenly, it hits you? Damn, I’m lonely. Or maybe it sneaks up on you at night when you can’t fall asleep.
No one tells you that while digital nomad life looks dreamy on Instagram, the reality can get isolating—fast. You’ve left behind office small talk (good riddance), but also a stable friend group and family dinners.
In exchange, you get constant small talk and a revolving door of new acquaintances.
Now, I’ve met some of my best friends on the road—and my partner—so I’m all for building new connections. I’m not denying that digital nomad communities can foster some of the fastest and most meaningful friendships out there.
But the game changes when you’re always moving. Of course, there’s an upside: the people you meet on the road get you. They won’t question your life choices when you say, “I don’t know where I’m going next.”
Still, a digital nomad community can feel a bit fleeting, can it not?
So let’s talk about creating deep connections—on the road or in spite of the road.
For Business Owners Seeking More Freedom:
The Unchained Entrepreneur
Ready to stop feeling chained to your business?
If you’re a seasoned business owner and you’re asking yourself, “Where’s the freedom I was promised?”, this 75 minute masterclass is for you.
It’s time to transform how you do business and finally achieve the location freedom and time mastery you’ve been dreaming of.
Why Digital Nomad Communities Matter
The Secret to Actually Enjoying This Lifestyle
Yes, you can work from anywhere. But what’s the point if you have no one to share it with? Finding a solid digital nomad community means spontaneous dinners, coworking buddies who bring you coffee, and friends who actually understand what you do for a living (instead of assuming you’re just on “one long vacation”).
But community isn’t just about the people you meet in person—it’s also about the ones who travel with you virtually. More on that in a minute.
There were times when I was very intentional about seeking out community. In Lisbon, for example, I built connections by booking a stay at a co-living space and hitting up plenty of evening socials.
Then there were times—like my four month solo-stint in Ubud—when I preferred solitude over company. And honestly, the nomadic lifestyle is perfect for both.
But what I’ve really found to be the key to enjoying this lifestyle? Tapping into online digital communities and making a concerted effort to contribute and engage. Because while your environment might change, the right community stays with you.
How a Digital Nomad Community can support your business growth
Building a business as a location-independent entrepreneur is exciting—but it can also feel lonely. The right digital nomad community helps eliminate the feeling that you have to do it all alone and provides a sense of companionship. Traditional masterminds often don’t cut it because people either find you cool or odd—but the real mental support you need? It’s just not there.
That’s exactly why I run (and co-run) not one, not two, but three online communities for nomads and expats:
- The Freedom Seekers Community – A monthly membership focused on the mindset and mental shifts we all need to create true freedom. Join here.
- My Freedom Business Mastermind – A twelve month commitment where we go DEEP into soul-aligned business growth. Join here
- The Expat Pivot (co-founded) – A free Facebook group for seasoned online business owners who are ready to break free from their desks and embrace a location-independent lifestyle—without sacrificing business success. Join here
Of course, these are just three of the many spaces where you can plug into professional communities filled with people who do life and business on the same frequency as you.

It only takes 5 clients to make your dreams come true. Turn existing connections into paying clients without social media and begin to travel the world:
Community as a Radical Act of Freedom
Now, let’s talk about the bigger purpose of community—not just on a personal level, but in a social and political sense. Because finding your tribe in digital nomad communities isn’t just about making friends—it’s about building something bigger and maintaining your place in society.
Standing together, no matter where or how, is always an act of resistance and a sign of positive progress. In times of political/social upheaval or a stark shift to the political right, loneliness only fuels disconnection. That’s why we must be intentional about plugging into and nurturing the communities we’re part of.
Being in digital nomad communities can create real impact. By nature, our lifestyle and mindset already challenge systems that don’t serve us. Communities remind us to build and design something better in place of what no longer works.
Consider this your invitation to use your mindset, your lifestyle, and the community you build—not just to defy, but to lead.
How to Actually Find a Digital Nomad Community
Okay, so how the freak do you find your tribe?
Some people just create community wherever they go. They step off a flight with a new best friend and seamlessly plug into local groups. But if you’re reading this, I’m guessing that’s not you. Am I right?
Now, I can be a social butterfly when I want (or need) to be—like at conferences or retreats. But honestly? My idea of fun is a glass of wine on the balcony while watching the stars.
So, where do you start?
My biggest advice: find digital nomad communities on the ground and intentionally plug into one or two online communities that stay with you, no matter where you go.
Finding digital nomad communities on the ground.
Now, there are a few ways to find your people on the ground. Here are some of my go-to strategies:
- Meetup.com – Check for events in your city, attend a few, and let yourself get invited to the other gatherings happening around town.
- Facebook groups – Search for your city’s digital nomad or expat groups and keep an eye out for local events.
- Co-living and co-working spaces – These spots usually have a community manager and regular events. You can either strike up conversations throughout the day or just show up at a few gatherings.
- Cafés – Find the “nomad cafés” (the ones packed with laptops), and you’ll likely spot good ol’ flyers near the cashier advertising parties, events, or workshops.
- Create your own event – Yep, you heard that right! Instead of waiting for the perfect workshop or hoping to land a speaking gig at a conference, host your own event. Even if only five people show up, that’s a win!
Finding online digital nomad communities
There are tons of different vibes out there. My biggest advice? Stay true to yourself. Some communities lean bro-y, others are all about partying, and then there are the hardcore travel-obsessed groups. Honestly, some of the spaces I see online just aren’t my vibe (which is partly why I created my own!).
Below, I’m sharing a few communities I’m part of (or run), along with other places where you might find your tribe. And to be clear—I’m not just talking about Facebook groups where you drop a question and dip. I mean managed, curated communities where real conversations happen.
- Nomad conferences – Just Google “digital nomad conferences” and check out the ones that pop up. Many have active Telegram groups where connections actually happen.
- Freedom Seekers Community – This is my space, where we take the mindset side of freedom seriously. It’s a coaching-based community for those who want to not only break free from old systems but intentionally design a freedom-based life.
- The Expat Pivot – Perfect for business owners ready to take their work on the road. If you need strategic and logistical support to make it happen, this is the place. We offer a few paid programs, but the community itself is free!
- Digital Nomad Society – A great monthly membership for those considering the lifestyle and looking for support as they ease in.
Final Words
Community can be the secret weapon to thriving as a digital nomad, if you’re intentional about it. Whether online or on the ground, finding your people makes this lifestyle sustainable—and way more fun. Be intentional, plug in, and remember: freedom isn’t just about where you can go, but it’s about the freedom you give your mind to explore as well. Now, go find your tribe and let me know in the comments which digital nomad community you love most these days.
